Writing a one year master thesis, how it all ended!

As can be read below I have finished a one year master thesis! What I forgot to write about in the last post was the later months of the writing.

All right, so there I was, I had spent 2 (two) years on this project, and had no feeling of getting closer to the finish line. Actually, I had decided to put in another six months and then take a break. So, yeah, I was tired of it, real tired! During the summer working and writing, I had searched and found a theory. At the end of the summer I had submitted a draft to my supervisor, and as always I got several pages of notes from our meeting. I was not done! Now autumn had come and I worked with the notes and sent in another draft, got some notes back about 3 (three) pages worth. This had been our way of working, me submitting drafts and getting notes, working with the notes, making a new draft and submitting it, and so on.

About this time or perhaps some months before, I got this feeling that maybe I was not worthy writing the thesis. Possibly I had not shown myself worthy for the Saami god that handles the animals and is closely tied to the bear (Leib-olmai), or perhaps the bear himself did not think of me as worthy. So, I sent an e-mail to a Saami academic with these thoughts and she answered nicely and gave me some thoughts to ponder. But the thought of my worthiness lingered and I almost went out to the woods to sit there with a drum trying to make contact…!

However, without visiting the woods I started working with the last notes. At this time I had finished my work and could spend whole days with the thesis. When I was done with the notes, I realized that I needed to do some more work with the theory and method section. So I did that. Now I had to redo parts of the analysis. I had also read through a really good thesis that used the same method, so I “borrowed” that structure for my thesis. This meant that the introduction chapters also got revised. When I had done that I sent a draft without the discussion and conclusion chapters, because I wanted to see if I had done some progress or not. It seemed that I had done so! Now the time had come to write the discussion and conclusion! And when I had made a new draft with them, a light of hope was lit that I just might be able to submit it for the seminary in January!

I am not sure what it was that got me to do some good thesis writing that autumn, if it was the thoughts on my worthiness towards the bear, or if it was something else. But it really felt like I was on my way moving forward, which had not been the case for some time…

And now for something completely different! After the seminary I went to a café to sort of pick up the pieces and to get some food, and also to write down my experiences of the day. Later that evening I met up with some friends for an event called Drink and draw. It is an event where boys and girls meet and drinks and draws! Well, the first comic made by the gang that evening featured me and here it is!

Character design touch up

Here are the characters again with a few minor touch ups being done. I guess the rest of the quirks that needs to be attended, will sort them selves out, when I start using the characters.

Take care!

Here are the main characters for Alla älskar... (Everyone loves...)

Here are the main characters for Fanny V.

And here are the main characters from Hämnare i Rött (Avenger in Red).

Character design part 3

This week I will show you the characters from my third upcoming comics project! This project is independent from the previous two, and is a thriller/horror story (of sorts) that takes place here in Gothenburg. These are photos and not scans and I know there are some small details that I will take care of!

At the moment I'm working with the teasers for these projects. A few pages to get a feel for the story and the characters, without telling the whole story...!

Why three projects you ask? Well, I kind of got the two last ideas almost simultaneous, and I kind of like to develop things...so...that's why...I guess...

Take care!

How to make apple mash, the comic!

It might be some months ago, that I got a tip that a comics publisher were going to put out a book with recipes from comics artists. At first I didn’t know if I had an idea strong enough for a book like that. To my surprise I did! Unfortunately the deadline came fast and I was out of town that very week. So I decided to do my pages the week after, and so I did! Because I thought that they had a few weeks to put it all together and so on... to my surprise they had already sent it to the printers!

So what have I learned from this? A deadline, is a deadline, is a deadline!

So here are my comics pages about apple mash! Although I think it’s kind of self explanatory I will provide a translation under the pages.

Take care!

How to make apple mash by P-G Lidström

Wash up jars!

Peal, take away the pips and cut the apples into small pieces.

Pour a small amount of water...

...and jam sugar!

Boil!

Well, boil asunder then you wretched pieces!!!!!!!!!

Aouch!!!

Pour the apple mash into the clean jars.

Put the lid on!
Boiling hot apple mash + jar of glass + lid =

Aaaaaooouch!! Raaaaaaahhh!!!!

Recipe
- Lots of jars.
- Lots of apples.
- Jam sugar, that you can mix with castor sugar, if you would like a looser mash.
- Put the apple pieces in water with lemon juice, (or a vitamin C-tablet) so they won’t turn brown.
- I tend to rough or play it by ear, the amount of kilos of apples and jam sugar, it makes it more thrilling...!!
- Good luck!

The final piece of analysis!

Finally I’m done with the analysis! Here is the last scan.

I’ve continued with the Spirou album Drömfabriken/Machine qui rêve. Sadly the binding of the album gave way, so some of the pages are now loose... The grade of the album went from very fine to (kind of) poor quite quickly!! (By grading I mean the scale that the comics collectors use...)

Sometimes it’s hard to estimate how long something will take, for this analysis I had estimated about 3-4 weeks... Lets just say it took longer than that...! But hopefully I’m going to benefit from it later on...I hope!

Next up is character design!

Take care!

Some drawings at last!

Finally I can show you some drawings, it was some time ago that was a possibility! Currently I’m looking at various designs for the character design for my projects. To do this and get to try out the style I analyze the style. You might also say that I’m copying them, but analyzing sounds better...!

These drawings will function as inspiration for the design later on. How the end result will be, remains to be seen... this exercise also functions as a way to try and improve my skill set, or challenge me if you will. I’ve been really inclusive when I looked at stuff that I like, the styles you will see here are mainly from animation and comics.

Here are some pictures on the drawings so far!

Take care!

Inking done?

Yesterday I finished inking the pages, today I'm going to have a second look at them to see what I've missed. I'm quite surprised how the inking, that used to be so hard before, now goes swimmingly. Granted off course that I'm not a fancy inker, my inking style is what you would call, the style of tracing. To quote the film Chasing Amy (I think).

Take care!

Half way through!

I'm half way through the project, well almost! So far it's been fun and educational, and I learn stuff all along the way. It will be fun and exciting to see the end result.

I've always enjoyed the sketching part of a project, when you're searching for the right expression or pose. When it comes to clean up, I find that to be of a more up hill climb with more resistance. During chapter 3, I tried to work around this by doing more detailed sketches in blue. And to my amazement it worked, maybe this is a fluke, but the clean up process of this chapter went really smooth and was not that difficult as it can be.

One funny thing I've noticed is that I can sometimes feel a bit worried about some panels that contain a lot of information, or are complicated for some reason. When I've drawn them they almost always turn out to be the best panels!

I've come to terms with the fact that the process of it all will be quite visible through this project, just like the fact that I've in chapter 3 centered the text in the word balloons, which I haven't done earlier.

For you that are not fluent in the Swedish language I can comfort you that with about 94% certainty there will be a translation in English! When I'm done with the final chapter I will make a translation.

Very soon I'm going to begin the work on chapter 4... And as always I can't tell you when chapter 4 will be done. For a progress report you will have to come back here!

Take care!

Writing

Well, last week I did clean-up, which I'm going to continue with this weekend. But today I'm going to devout myself to a script that's been laying around for awhile.

I let my friends read it a couple of months ago and I've been processing the feedback that I got but I haven't really had a day when I've written on it, it's just been small ideas scribbled down on a piece of paper. Maybe I'll get done with it today?

What's it about you ask?
Well, it's kind of hard to tell, because I don't want to give too much away. It's kind of a relationship drama, and following your dreams, leave town or stay behind kind of thing. I see it as a comic, but lately I think it could actually be a short film... We'll see about that, the future will tell what's it gonna be.

Take care!
